Thyroidectomy for recurrent sub-acute thyroiditis

A 21-year-old woman presented in 2015 with palpitations, weight and hair loss, mood swings and diarrhoea. She was diagnosed with thyrotoxicosis (Table). On examination, thyroid was normal and no evidence of opthalmopathy. A 65-year-old gentleman was referred by his GP because of acute kidney injury and hypercalcaemia, which was associated with low levels of parathyroid hormone. He had been fit and well and was on no regular medications.
